Another Girl Who Loves Cars

As far as hobbies go, cars are generally an unusual response from a girl. So far I’ve mentioned that I like cars before and have talked about them a little bit, but I haven’t ever really divulged into the story behind it. Which is why I thought this might be an interesting post to talk about my background and emergence into the “car scene”.

I have never been the usual girl who played with Barbies (although I did have a few, and my favorite was my Jasmine Barbie), played house, conducted tea parties, and dressed up dolls. I was more of the tomboy (play in the dirt, climb trees, and make club houses) type. So I guess for my parents it wasn’t a big surprise when I became fascinated with cars. However, it wasn’t until high school that it really became a hobby and not just an interest.

At about the end of sophomore year/beginning of junior year I had made friends with some other car people who not only were interested in cars but also modded their cars and went to car meets/shows. This introduced me to the car scene. I started meeting new people and learning a lot about different cars and soon I couldn’t wait to get my own car to mod. However it wouldn’t be until the end of senior year when I would have my own car so the research began, what car did I want?

Ironically the car I ended up getting was initially one that I didn’t like as far as looks went. But in the end the car grew on me and on May 28, 2006 I picked up my 2005 Acura RSX Type S in Nighthawk Black Pearl. At that point the only manual driving experience I had had was in an Acura Integra GSR for about 5-10 minutes, so my dad test-drove and drove home my car. Once the car was home I was thrilled. I went out to a parking lot that day and spent a few hours teaching myself how to drive manual and afterwards drove directly to my friend’s house to show off my new car.

Now that I had my car I was pumped to start going to meets and shows with it and meet other RSX owners. I became a member on the ClubRSX forums and soon met several other kids my age, who later became some of my best friends. Having a community soon jumpstarted the desire to mod because now there were others who could appreciate the things I did to my car and who could inspire me in a friendly competitive way.

Thousands of dollars and many hours of labor later I had a car that I was proud to drive and show off. Unfortunately though others also appreciated my car enough to break into it once and try to steal it another time. This was naturally devastating but luckily it also happened before I was about to put more money into it. Although I no longer mod “Luna” (my RSX Type S) because of what happened, I still love cars and am excited for the day when I get to find a new project, hopefully one that isn’t such a hot commodity for thieves.

Kanye West’s Runaway Film

31 10 2010

On October 23, Kanye West’s short film “Runaway” premiered on MTV at 8pm. It opens with Kanye West’s character running down a winding road in a forest, foreshadowing the outcome of the story. The scene then changes to the present with Kanye driving down this same forest road with a red sky contrasting the darkness of the forest. I have to make a comment on his car here because it’s an amazing looking car, and I love sports cars with pop-up headlights. I had to look this one up because I had never seen a car like this before, the Tatra MTX a Czechoslovakian V8 supercar. As Kanye is driving, what looks like a meteor crashes in front of his MTX. When he inspects the damage he finds a phoenix lying unconscious on the ground and brings her back to his place with an intense explosion behind him as he carries her off.

The next scene shows the phoenix waking up watching the news. This is the first scene where you really get a chance to see Selita Ebanks’ costume. This Victoria Secrets model is no stranger to wings and sports a pair of these in this video along with some strategically placed feathers on her chest and midsection as well as her arms. Her eye makeup is also incredibly intense, with white eye shadow and long white eyelashes; the makeup artists did a wonderful job.

Kanye plays some music for her and begins introducing her to his life and culture. The music during the scene when the phoenix is dancing in the living room is probably one of my favorite parts of the entire film. It then leads into his song “All of the Lights’ where the most or one of the most controversial looking imagery really takes place with a huge Michael Jackson head, and red hooded figures marching with a band.

The next longest scene is in a huge dining hall, every dinner guest is wearing white, the table clothes are white, and the chairs are white. The green walls and the phoenix’s rose-colored feathers offset all of the white. Here the phoenix is now wearing a strangely beautiful headdress with chains dangling off about a foot in length. After one guest interrupts Kanye by saying “You’re girlfriend’s really beautiful, do you know she’s a bird?” he leaves the table and begins playing “Runaway” on a white piano. Once the piano starts an entire troupe of ballerinas run into the room and an 8-minute dance begins. The contrast of the green walls look amazing against the black leotards and tutus of the ballerinas as three of them perform their own solos and the rest stay behind dancing in a large group. This scene finally ends with the phoenix’s distress over the large bird intended for dinner that is placed in front of her.

The next scene goes back into the backyard with the phoenix and the various animals hanging out. The phoenix and Kanye finally have a dialogue, which leads into their romantic scene. The next morning he realizes the phoenix is gone and the scene that started the film comes true with “Lost in the World” playing. He desperately runs, trying to find her again while the phoenix goes out in the same manner she came.

In my own personal opinion, this film was amazing, the colors, the imagery, everything was carefully planned out. I have watched this at least 5 or 6 times now and each instance is just as mesmerizing as the last. The only negative thing I have to say is watching this premiere on MTV really was not ideal. There were about 3-4 commercial breaks sporadically throughout the premiere which really threw off the entire feel, but it was an excuse to watch it again online. I think Kanye has really brought music to a new level by incorporating his upcoming CD’s tracks into this short film and it really shows his musical genius, as strange as some of it may be.

Reformed Porsche “Hater”

2 10 2010

Before I even delve into this post, let me backtrack and explain the title before I get flamed. To say that I was a Porsche hater isn’t entirely true, what I mean to say is I used to believe that Porsche’s were overrated for the money.

Being the car lover that I am, living in Northern Virginia is great for seeing cars that some only see on TV or in magazines. That being said, I think most NoVA-ers would agree that Porsches have a tendency to be the Honda Civic or Ford Mustang of luxury cars. By this I mean that it seems that once one has started earning a high enough salary, Porsche seems to be on the frontline for luxury sport cars. So it’s easy to lose that awe for seeing a Porsche, especially the Boxster or Carrera, when there’s another one on the road every 5 minutes (like the Civic or Mustang).

I went quite awhile with this view of Porsche (the successful man’s Civic), until I met a friend with a Porsche 911 GT3. From the moment I saw his car I loved it but I still had my prejudices. It was certainly more attractive than the Carrera and Boxster but was it worth over 100k? Either I have amazing charm or a good friend because he let me drive his GT3 not once, but twice, once with him and once alone. It was at this moment I fell in love, sure it’s not the fastest car you can buy for that money. I could easily buy a ZR1 with that money and have at least 200 more hp. Now coming from an Acura RSX-S, of course the Porsche was much more powerful but it wasn’t even the power that won me but the entire feel of the car was just right. It’s so connected with the road and does exactly what you want it to do that it’s hard not to experience a new love for driving. I can’t say that if I had 115K that I would buy a GT3, but I definitely wouldn’t rule it out.

So to end this post I’m going to leave you with a few pictures from my car meet days and a link to the 2011 Porsche 911 GT2 RS (it’s beautiful)
